Subtitle Editor: Edit, Sync and Convert

Edit the text and timing of every cue in an SRT or WebVTT file, shift or sync subtitles that are out of step with the video, and convert between SRT, WebVTT and a plain transcript.

Nothing leaves your browser

How it works

  1. 1Open subtitlesPaste them or open an .srt or .vtt file. The format is detected for you.
  2. 2Pick the jobEdit cues one by one, shift or sync the timing, or convert to another format.
  3. 3DownloadSave as SRT, WebVTT or a plain transcript. Switching jobs keeps your subtitles.

Questions

Are my subtitles uploaded?

No. The file is read and rewritten in your browser, so the subtitles never leave your device.

What counts as a problem?

Cues that overlap the next one, end before they start or are empty; more than 20 characters per second to read; lines longer than 42 characters; and more than two lines. These follow common broadcast and streaming subtitle guidelines.

When should I sync two cues instead of shifting?

If the subtitles are off by the same amount all the way through, shift them. If they start right but drift further out as the video plays, usually from a different frame rate, sync: give the correct start time of an early cue and a late cue, and every cue in between is stretched to match.

What happens to styling when I convert?

Italic, bold and underline are kept. SRT font colours and WebVTT classes are removed, because the other format can't show them. WebVTT voice tags become a name prefix, like "Asha: Hello".

How do I enter times?

As hours:minutes:seconds, milliseconds, like 00:01:23,500. A dot instead of the comma works too.
